Calling all African American and Hispanic High School students who love virtual reality technology, coding, innovation, and learning! We Are Code VR/AR Hackathon is an opportunity to learn about virtual reality and other immersive Technologies, meet new people, and get hands-on experience with VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), design and development. Win  Cash, prizes, and get free Food, Drinks, Swag Bags, t-shirts, and VR Gear, and Chance to turn your idea into a start up!


What is A We Are Code VR Hackathon?


It's a fun, challenging, and creative competition between Youth of Color from different cities around the U.S. who will go head-to-head from different venues to design the best Virtual Reality app, or game idea using Virtual Reality headset technology. It will be highly rewarding where Oculus Developers, VR coders, designers, technologists, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts will come together to help students work on project ideas and win prizes.


The We Are Code VR Hackathon will last 17 hours and focus on developing virtual reality apps and content for VR immersive technology. This event is also about design, creation, and problem solving. If you have an interest in coding, graphics, Art, 3D modeling, film, music, Sports, education, game design, or business, you will love the We Are Code VR Hackathon!

THE CHALLENGE: BUILD A  STAY HEALTHY VR/AR VIDEO GAME THAT MAKES EXERCISING AND FITNESS FUN


On September 8, 2018, We Are Code VR/ AR Hackathon will invite 50 students from Los Angeles to compete with 50 students from Oakland California. Participants will come together and form into teams of (5) for 17 hours and will be asked to develop virtual reality, augmented reality applications,  entertainment, or sport video games that helps young people lose weight and stay healthy and fit. 


The event will be live- streamed between California State University LA  in Southern California and West Oakland Youth Development Center in Northern California, with the hackathon taking place simultaneously in two locations with 50 youth of color at each separate location! The Hackathon is an opportunity to learn, and experiment with new technologies such as Virtual Reality  (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), even to learn coding from scratch.


The hackers will be broken up into teams and tasked with designing and developing a VR/AR, or animation that empowers youth to have fun gaming while staying healthy. 


EMPOWERING OUR YOUTH OF COLOR THROUGH STEAM!

We Are Code VR Hackathon is an opportunity to empower our Inner City youth through new technologies and highlight the historic role of African American athletes.  Students will experience the importance of creating their own tech startups while also learning to develop games for virtual reality  and augmented technology. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to identify the local talent that can continue this mission in the future, through entrepreneurship, startups, and STEAM careers.


Who Should Apply?

African American and Latino students ages 13-19, who want to become software developers, game programmers, designers, artists, animators, storytellers, VR entrepreneurs, and those who want to spend time creating Solutions with VR and other immersive Technologies.


No previous computer programming experience is necessary. Students ages 13-19 can attend We Are Code VR Hackathon, regardless of your level of skill.


What is the Deadline for

Sign-Up?

Sign-ups will be opened until we register 50 students  (25 girls and 25 guys, grades 9-12, or junior college).


What Do You Need to Bring?

Some sort of photo ID, a registration form, a signed parent permission form, a laptop computer,  and a charger. If you do not have a computer,  no problem, we will provide you with one to use for the competition.


Rules  and Code of Conduct

In general, we ask that students be clean,  respectful,  and courteous to others. There will be no alcohol,  or drugs tolerated.  Also,  bring your best game on.
